WELCOME TO THE
ORIENTAL PLAZA The once-thriving City of Johannesburg is undergoing a revival, with it's pivot in the programming and upliftment of the Market Theatre Precinct, Mary Fitzgerald Square, the Ghandi Square and the new ultra modern Nelson Mandela bridge, which will be gracing the city with majesty. At the heart of this renaissance is the Oriental Plaza. The Oriental Plaza is like no other Shopping Centre in Africa, and for that matter, perhaps the world. This is because the shop owners, own the Oriental Plaza. This unique situation stems from the traumatic history of the Plaza and the survival of South Africa's Indian traders under the most adverse and hostile business conditions. In the mid 1970's Johannesburg's Indian traders were forcibly removed from Pageview's 14th street - a tourist attraction with an atmosphere of its own, nicknamed the "Petticoat Lane" of South Africa. This was a move that had a devastating effect on some traders who effectively lost their livelihood. However, although they were moved to the Oriental Plaza under duress, the traders with their flair for merchandising began a rearguard action to win back their old 14th street customers. Today the Oriental Plaza has a unique open-air atmosphere and not only attracts Johannesburgers, but visitors from all over the continent. For the shopper, the Oriental Plaza is a true paradise. There are over 360 stores to visit and all the big brand names are yours for the taking at prices that are considerably lower than the standard. We hope that you visit the Oriental Plaza and enjoy the wonderful experience of our hospitality and service. Chairman - Board of
